Today I want to consider another woman we meet in the Bible. She doesn’t have a name but we know she was a widow from Nain (A village located 14 kilometers south of Nazareth) whose only son had died. Death had taken away her only source of hope, strength as well as protection. There was nothing she could do about it but weep bitterly. But then something unexpected happened. A stranger she met told her not to weep. The rest is history.
Elijah had been used by God to hold back rain from the land for over 3 years, because of their sins. He became a man on the run because of this and we can only imagine the stress he experienced during those years. There’s one statement in the Bible that seems to further complicate Elijah’s situation. Consider this. “After a long time, in the third year, the word of the LORD came to Elijah: “Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.”
Paul was facing death at the hands of the Roman government. It would not have been a self-imposed death except that he could probably have escaped it by denying his faith in Christ. In Philippians 1:21-27 he discusses his ambivalent feelings about life and death. In a small measure, Maurice (not his real name) must have felt similar feelings. [A sermon by Dr. Arnold Lastinger. The Bible’s references to the life and ministry of John the Baptist are very brief compared to the written records about other men and women of God. However, his character and integrity were so much that there are many lessons we can draw from his life. In my sermon today I will share with you four principles from the life and ministry of John the Baptist.
Someone said, “I bet the Funeral Parlors in Jesus’ day just about went broke. Anywhere Jesus went, the dead were being raised.” Jesus probably raised many people from the dead during his earthly ministry, although the Bible records only three of them.
On July 25th, 1911 Bobby Leach suffered two broken knee caps and a fractured jaw when he went over the Niagara Falls in a Barrel. However, it’s not the injuries sustained from going over Niagara Falls that killed him. In the year 1926 Leach injured his leg when he slipped on an orange peel. The leg became infected, and eventually, gangrene necessitated the amputation of the leg. Leach died of complications two months later.
