Introduction
“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. (John 6:67)
Disappointments are a part part of life. It either makes us or breaks us depending on our reactions. Therefore today’s sermon is about reacting to disappointments positively.
1. Forgive and forget
A. Disappointments hurt our emotions
B. This hurt, if not addressed transforms itself into grudge and bitterness
C. Talk to some one about it (not gossip). Pray and ask God to extend his grace so that you can forgive
D. Jesus’ example: The disciples who disappointed him, (Peter denied him, Judas betrayed him, the rest deserted him, others crucified him)
E. Reasons why people don’t forgive: Think it will punish the offender, Self pity
F. Unforgiveness keeps God’s healing at the bay, keeps you from moving forward
G. Most of all forgive yourself
2. Avoid quick decisions
A. Don’t base your decisions on emotions
B. The disciples sought to deep fry an entire village in their anger, (Luke 9:52-55)
C. Such decisions may seem appropriate for the moment but they put the future at stake.
3. Seek to know God’s purpose
A. God had a purpose in the disappointment of Mary and Martha, (John 11:14-15)
B. God brings forth good out of the bad if we allow, (Romans 8:28)
C. Recognize the cause of disappointment, it will help you in the future.
Application
A. Some times we feel disappointed about God also, (unanswered prayers???)
B. People who let you down are the ones you love and care most (Children, Siblings, Friends, Spiritual leaders etc.)
C. Don’t blame them or God – blaming doesn’t take you anywhere
D. This is what God’s word says, “For his anger lasts only a brief moment, and his good favor restores one’s life. One may experience sorrow during the night, but joy arrives in the morning.” (Psalms 30:5, NET) – Hold fast onto this promise and God will surely deliver you.
E. Invitation: Come to the alter this evening if you like God to re-flame your hopes and restore your faith in Him.
