Introduction

Text: Selected scripture portions from the book of Genesis Chapters 14, 15, 17, 18.

Look at the picture above. You see a mother who is expecting to give birth to a baby. The baby will not be born over a night. It takes 10 months for the baby to be fully formed in Mother’s womb and after that period he is ready to see this world. In other words the appointed time for his/her birth comes after 10 months and the parents have to wait patiently while taking care of the unborn child.

God also has an appointed time for everything. The bible says,

“For everything there is an appointed time, and an appropriate time for every activity on earth:” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, NET)

Bible verses used: Read Philippians 1:27-30 & 2:12-18

In these passages we read how St. Paul encouraged the believers of Philippi to apply their faith in Christ to their social life. It is clear that God’s intention is that believers should have an active influence for good in society (See Matthew 5:16). If we avoid society by locking our selves into a round of safe Christian activities and meetings, we cannot influence our world for God.

1. Contending for the faith

Even though Paul was unsure of the outcome of his imprisonment and impending trial, he was concerned that – whatever the outcome – his friends at Philippi should continue to live for God.

Romans 9 and Romans 11 formed a break in Paul’s letter to the Romans. In that passage, Paul’s focus was on salvation and the Jew. Paul wanted to show them that God was not neglecting them in this present age, but that they could be saved by calling on the name of the Lord. Now, Paul returns to the main idea of his letter. He has spent considerable time telling us how we are saved, what we are saved from and what salvation has done for us. In this last section of the book, Paul’s focus shifts to some very practical matters. He will discuss many aspects of everyday living in this world.

These first two verses of Romans 12, give us some insight into an area of our walk with God that we must never over look. These two verses tell us the secret of holy living. Paul tells us what God expects from us and how we are to achieve His goals for our lives. He tells us that holy living revolves around our surrender to three powerful concerns. Let’s see just what they are and what they demand as we consider the thought: Our spiritual act of worship. Click here to read the rest of, Bible study: Our Spiritual act of Worship – Romans 12:1-2
