The US Supreme Court’s decision to legalize gay marriage nationwide on June 26th, 2016 triggered mixed responses from Christian Communities not only across the country but the global church. When I read the various responses on the web the thought that crossed my mind was, “What will I do if this happened in my country, Sri Lanka?” I prayed about and the Holy Spirit implanted five thoughts in my heart. I will never lose my Heart
Matthew 16:18
And I say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades (death) will not overpower it [by preventing the resurrection of the Christ].
The decision indeed struck a huge blow not only to the church in America but to the entire body of Christ. As I pondered about it the Holy Spirit of God reminded me of Jesus’ promise to his disciples, (that is you and me) and I decided I must never lose my heart.
I will Pray & Reach Out
2 Peter 2:5
And if He did not spare the ancient world, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought [the judgment of] a flood upon the world of the ungodly;
We lost a battle for souls but the war is far from being over. We cannot rest but keep on praying for the homosexual community and reaching out to them. When we faithfully fulfill our 50% of the Great Commission God will be faithful to hold his end of the bargain. Therefore I will remember Noah and the words of Paul the apostle and keep on praying and reaching out to them. After all, Christ died for the homosexual also.
I will prepare for the Future
John 16:33
I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]
Ironically the decision not only earns the homosexual community the legal right and freedom to marry but also the grounds to discriminate against the Church and a perfectly legal reason to harass the Christian community even more [Ex: Designer who won’t make same-sex wedding websites loses case.] Now let us not forget Jesus’ powerful words which prepare us for the future.
I will understand the Times
2 Timothy 3:1-4
But understand this, that in the last days dangerous times [of great stress and trouble] will come [difficult days that will be hard to bear]. 2 For people will be lovers of self [narcissistic, self-focused], lovers of money [impelled by greed], boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy and profane, 3 [and they will be] unloving [devoid of natural human affection, calloused and inhumane], irreconcilable, malicious gossips, devoid of self-control [intemperate, immoral], brutal, haters of good, 4 traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of [sensual] pleasure rather than lovers of God.
God is not surprised or bothered by a court ruling. He has seen it long before man even thought of homosexuality because God has visited the future already. His prophets have prophesied these things will happen and those prophecies must see their fulfillment. A fulfillment of biblical prophecy concerning the end times and an indicator of Christ’s imminent return. Paul the Apostle affirms it in his second epistle to Timothy.
I will confront & condemn
2 Timothy 4:2
2 preach the word [as an official messenger]; be ready when the time is right and even when it is not [keep your sense of urgency, whether the opportunity seems favorable or unfavorable, whether convenient or inconvenient, whether welcome or unwelcome]; correct [those who err in doctrine or behavior], warn [those who sin], exhort and encourage [those who are growing toward spiritual maturity], with inexhaustible patience and [faithful] teaching.
The decision makes confronting and condemning the sin of homosexuality much more challenging than it used to be [Ex: Preacher Prosecuted for anti-homosexuality Speech] but the word of Paul the Apostle to Timothy his protege exhorts us to keep on preaching God’s Word. The Christian life was never a cakewalk. It’s going from bad to worse but let’s not forget Jesus’ words. They will persecute but let’s not lose heart because our Lord and Savior have overcome the world.
Closing Remarks
I sincerely hope and pray these thoughts will help the American Christian and the Church as a whole to step into the uncertain future not with doubt but with faith in God. The advocates for gay rights have won their case but God is still on the throne and in control of everything. Satan has won one of many battles but the final war is yet to begin and we know we will win the war because the Word of God says so.
