Introduction
Here again, four consecutive words embrace the whole realm of scripture profit, and again the order is a part of the inspiration. [Taken from How to Prepare Sermons by William Evans]
Read 2 Timothy 3:16
1. Doctrine
The word means teaching. It covers the same ground as “wisdom” in the preceding outline of Christ’s work. As a teacher He,
A. Corrects our errors, (Matthew 5:21-48)
B. Confirms our right convictions, (Psalm 119:105)
C. Reveals new truths, (John 14:6)
2. Reproof
This word seems to refer to the work on the conscience, as the preceding outline has to do with the understanding.
A. Compelling the consciousness of sin and guilt, (John 16:8)
B. Bringing us before the court of conscience, (Romans 2:15)
C. Constraining to a new rectitude, (Matthew 5:17)
3. Correction
This is not an easy word to render. It seems to carry the idea of reconstruction – setting up fallen men on his feet, restoring him.
A. Discovering the only true foundation, (Luke 6:48)
B. Building character and conduct with the right material, (Matthew 7:24-27)
C. Out of ruins constructing a temple of God, (1 Corinthians 3:16)
4. Instruction
Instruction in righteousness. This is teaching, like the first but it belongs not to the initial but to the advanced stage. It is the teaching that fully equips for duty and service.
A. It is knowledge of the mysteries of God, (1 Corinthians 2:10)
B. It is the knowledge of the secrets of spiritual power, (Jeremiah 33:3)
C. It is the full furnishing for service, (Zechariah 4:8)
Conclusion
God’s word is capable of dealing with any given situation or need. Do you abide in God’s Word?
