Sermon: Lazarus and the Rich Man

Introduction

Some think this parable was intended for unbelievers. Actually, the opposite is true. In it, Jesus targeted the Pharisees, religious authority figures of the Jewish world who indulged in wrongdoing while they had plenty of opportunities to do what was right and good.

The interpretation of the parable is even God’s people will be judged if they don’t do what is good and right when the opportunity is given. In today’s sermon, I am going to discuss this warning and its implications in detail.

1. Do what is right

A. The rich man had plenty of opportunities, (Luke 16:19-20)

B. He was aware of the beggar’s need, (Luke 16:21)

C. Even the Dogs licked the sores, but the rich man did nothing, (Luke 16:21b)

2. You will be judged

A. For not doing what is right and good, (Luke 16:22-23)

B. Even if you are a believer, (Father send Lazarus…, Luke 16:24-26)

C. For even unbelievers (the dogs licked…) do much good than some Christians

3. Adhere to the rebuke

A. While you are still alive. Once you are dead it’s too late, (Luke 16:27-28)

B. God gave Pastors and leaders to show you the right way, (Luke 16:29)

C. In doing so God gave you a great opportunity. Don’t miss it. (Luke 16:30-31)

Conclusion

One might argue that we are saved by grace, not by an act of righteousness. I agree, but still, God wants us to live out what we believe. Otherwise, our faith is dead and useless, like the faith of the rich man in this parable.
