Introduction

Christ’s method of dealing with His Church

But I have this against you: You have departed from your first love!  (Revelation 2:4, NET)

1. What is First love?

A. The love of espousal or engagement (Jeremiah 2:2)

B. The love of the new convert

2. The necessity of keeping first love

A. Without it orthodoxy and service are nothing.

B. No church has a right to exist without it (Revelation 2:5).

C. Without love all is lost (1 Corinthians 13).

3. Signs of lost love

A. Not necessarily:

a. Lack of activity, (Revelation 2:2)

b. Lack of orthodoxy, (Revelation 2:2)

c. Lack of patient suffering for Christ, (Revelation 2:3)

B. But definitely shown by the absence of:

a. Personal love in service

b. Joy in our activity for Christ

c. Unselfishness and forgetfulness of self

4. How first love is lost?

A. By neglecting to maintain fellowship and communion with God through the reading of the Word of God, prayer, and obedience.

B. By spiritual pride, forgetting unworthiness is still as great as the time of conversion.

5. Conclusion

A. How to regain lost love, (Revelation 2:5)

a. Remember – your past experience, the atmosphere in which you once lived, and so on.

b. Repent – turn back, confess, promise reformation.

c. Return – do the first works over again.

One Response to “Sermon: First love lost”

  1. Bonaventure Nkurunzi says:

First love needs to be restored. People are very much busy and want to conform to the standards of this world rather than complying with what the Bible teaches them to follow. Repentence and confession will serve to restore first love. Be blessed.
