Sermon notes: God commands Abraham to sacrifice Isaac

A painting of Abraham going to sacrifice Isaac.

Introduction

Elie Wiesel the most famous Holocaust survivor of all time once said this. “After the Holocaust, I did not lose faith in God. I lost faith in mankind!” If the Holocaust was a test, I am sure Wiesel passed it with flying colors. Speaking of tests, Abraham is a man we cannot ignore. Abraham proved that God can trust him. But God is all-knowing. He already knew Abraham will obey. Then why did he test his servant? Was he being a bully or a prankster? Definitely not. God had some lessons in mind that he wanted Abraham to learn. In today’s sermon, I want to share with you four of those lessons.

Sermon: The Beatitudes: Part 1

Introduction

Countless research has proved that happiness is every man’s greatest goal in life. In Matthew 5:3-12 & Luke 6:20-22 Jesus used the beatitudes to explain to His followers the true path to happiness. This teaching has not always been accepted well though because it’s a great contrast to the worldly notion of blessedness and happiness. George Bernard Shaw called it an “impractical outburst of anarchism and sentimentality.” The point is we need to change our focus in order to find any happiness at all in this life and the beatitudes are the way to do it. In today’s sermon let us consider how to embrace these principles?

Sermon: The Amazing Ministry of Peter and John

Introduction

The healing of a crippled beggar at the gate called “The Beautiful Gate” leading to the Temple is the first healing miracle recorded in the book of Acts. The disciples had performed miracles before, but this was also the first miracle they performed after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. There are five important principles we can draw from this chapter. If you have your bibles, please turn with me to Acts 3:1-26. [A sermon preached by Dr. Arnold Lastinger. Used with permission.]

Sermon: It’s all about Relationships

A photo of two people sitting under a tree during the night.

Introduction

If you were to boil the Christian life down into one word what would that word be? At the risk of being too simplistic, I submit that the word would be “Relationships”. When Jesus was asked the most important commandment, He talked about one’s relationship with God the Father. He pointedly indicated that one’s relationship with his fellow man is a close second. It is a safe assumption then that relationships are at the core of Christian living. Today, I want us to look at some considerations about our relationships. [A sermon by Dr. Arnold Lastinger. Sermon notes: Jesus heals a Roman Centurion’s Servant

A photo of a Galea worn by Roman Centurions.

Introduction

In the weeks that passed by, I shared with you Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount.” For the past 24 years, I have listened to many Preachers and preached many sermons myself. But none of those preachers or myself ever concluded a sermon with an unexpected warning like Jesus gave in his sermon on the mount. His exact words were,

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!” (Matthew 7:21-23)
